Paul F. Tompkins is from Philadelphia, PA, where he started performing stand-up comedy in 1986. In 1994, he moved to Hollywood, CA, which led Paul to a stint as a writer and performer on HBO’s MR. SHOW WITH BOB AND DAVID where he was nominated for an Emmy award for writing.
In 1999, Paul landed a role in director Paul Thomas Anderson’s critically acclaimed film MAGNOLIA and in 2000, Paul played the title role of “Peter” in the Warner Bros./NBC pilot called THE PETER PRINCIPLE which led to Paul being cast as series regular “Sullivan Pope” in the comedy DAG for NBC.
Since then, Paul has been featured on FRAISER (NBC), THE SKETCH SHOW (Fox), BOB’S BURGERS (Fox), ADVENTURE TIME (Adult Swim), KEY AND PEELE (Comedy Central), UP ALL NIGHT (NBC), LAST MAN STANDING (ABC), RAISING HOPE (Fox), COMMUNITY (NBC), CURB YOUR ENTHUSIASM (HBO), AQUA TEEN HUNGER FORCE (Adult Swim), THE LIFE AND TIMES OF TIM (HBO), TRUE JACKSON VP (Nickelodeon), WEEDS (Showtime), SARAH SILVERMAN PROGRAM (Comedy Central), LEWIS BLACK’S ROOT OF ALL EVIL (Comedy Central) and as the host of VH1’s BEST WEEK EVER WITH PAUL F. TOMPKINS. Paul can also be seen in the films THERE WILL BE BLOOD, THE INFORMANT, ANCHORMAN, TENACIOUS D and the Pick of Destiny, and he lent his voice to the animated film TANGLED.
Paul is also an internationally touring comedian, featuring regularly at such festivals as both Montreal and Chicago’s Just For Laughs festivals, the Melbourne Comedy Festival, San Francisco’s Sketchfest, Austin’s South By Southwest Festival, Portland’s Bridgetown Comedy Festival and Seattle’s Bumbershoot Music and Arts Festival. Paul has revolutionized the traditional standup tour with his groundbreaking “Tompkins 300” tour, originated in 2009 from a grass-roots campaign on Facebook to bring Paul to various cities throughout the United States and Canada. In 2013 Paul performed a two week sellout run of his stand up show “Crying and Driving” to at the Soho Theatre in London.
Paul’s stand-up has also been featured on LATE NIGHT WITH CONAN O’BRIEN (NBC), twice on COMEDY CENTRAL PRESENTS…PAUL F. TOMPKINS, JOHN OLIVER’S NEW YORK STANDUP SHOW (Comedy Central), and Paul garnered a WGA nomination for his work as a writer & correspondent on HBO’s REAL TIME WITH BILL MAHER. He also wrote and starred in his own one-man show, DRIVEN TO DRINK, for HBO. Paul has added his wit as a guest of numerous other shows, CONAN (TBS), THE TALKING DEAD (AMC), COMEDY BANG BANG (IFC), CURB: THE DISCUSSIONS (TV GUIDE), LARRY KING LIVE (CNN), COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN (CNBC), DENNIS MILLER (CNBC), TOUGH CROWD WITH COLIN QUINN (Comedy Central), and has hosted numerous REEL COMEDY episodes for Comedy Central
Paul’s latest CD FREAK WHARF, was released in December of 2009 and immediately went to the top of the I-tunes comedy charts. His last standup special for Comedy Central, YOU SHOULD HAVE TOLD ME, premiered June, 2010 and was released on DVD in December, 2010. His latest standup special for Comedy Central LABORING UNDER DELUSIONS, launched on April, 2012 on Comedy Central and followed on DVD; the CD LABORING UNDER DELUSIONS: LIVE IN BROOKLYN, from AST Records, followed in October, 2012.
In addition to stand-up, acting and creating film/television projects, Paul presents his monthly live variety event, THE PAUL F. TOMPKINS SHOW, to sold-out audiences at Largo in Hollywood. In 2010, Paul launched THE POD F. TOMPKAST, a podcast featuring clips from his Largo show, original sketches and interviews. In 2011, Rolling Stone placed THE POD F. TOMPKAST at number 1 of its “10 Best Comedy Podcasts”. Paul also performs his monthly DEAD AUTHORS show at UCB Theater in Los Angeles in support of the nonprofit organization 826LA, with a corresponding podcast in 2011. The show features Tompkins as H.G. Wells interviewing famous dead authors throughout history, as played by accomplished comic actors. Paul hosts a web-celebrity-interview series, SPEAKEASY, which launched on Break.com in 2012.
